FEATURED ARTICLE: Theres no place like my own log home

At one time or another you have probably dreamed of building a log home. What makes a log home so special? Why would I choose a log home over more conventional means?
We could fill your in-box with e-mail explaining the values of a log home. We could explain the superior heating & cooling efficiency and the high quality, sturdy construction (click on "F.A.Q." or "Info on our systems" for details). But the truth is that these are not usually the biggest reasons why families choose to build log homes. It really boils down to a lifestyle. It's the atmosphere of "vacationing at home".
Unless you have spent time in a log home, it is difficult to get a full picture of what it is like to live in one. That is the purpose of this month's newsletter: to let you hear what log homeowners are saying. Below you will find exerts from letters from our customers as well as quotes from some recent Detroit area newspapers. We hope you enjoy!

F.A.Q.

"We just love the atmosphere," Dale T. said of the [Barna log] home, which will include an attached gazebo-style room and a wraparound porch. "If you've ever gone into one when the fire is going on a winter evening, they are just so comfortable." Log homes, which conjure up romantic notions of America's past and relaxation at "up north" cabins or lodges, still haven't gained overwhelming popularity in metro Detroit. But more of the homes dot the local landscape every year.

-The Oakland Press: February 4, 2001

"At first we had our doubts! A log home might cramp our style, our friends thought we went off the deep end with all the work that they thought came with a log construction. Now they gaze in awe over the final product . . . We have had so many of our friends and family stay with us over the past 2 years, it would seem as if we had opened a lodge. However, what a treat it has been for us to be able to share the abeyance that this log home has to offer. All seem to say the same thing; your home has warmth like no other that we have ever been in or seen."

-Mark: log home owner for 4 years

If you want a more traditional look, consider the full round log (6 ½-, 8-, or 9-inch) system. It offers the beauty of the round look inside, as well as outside.
"I preferred that, " said Bob K., who built a $300,000 log home in Richmond.
Bob and Tamara's dream home, best described as "mountain contemporary," was purchased through Jim Barna Log Homes, a family-owned business since 1986.

-The Macomb Daily: July 29, 2001

"The front porch gets everybody. They come here, and they want to sit on the front porch."

-Beth: log home owner for 8 years

"I love you guys!! Thanks for the guidance and friendship thru the last 5 years. I can't believe it's really mine. I love my log home. Thank you for EVERYTHING!!!! It wasn't easy. I'm proud to be a Barna Log home owner!"

-Suzette: log home owner for 3 years (plus 5 years in the planning stage)

"As I sit at my computer typing away, I glance past my monitor and see the wind blow my fruit trees and the sunshine reflect off my garden stakes. I am reminded of how much I love my log home. Sure, the trim isn't completely finished, and the landscaping needs a little work, but right now I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. It's been six years now since that semi truck dropped off a pile of logs that were soon to become my log home. Sometimes I can't believe that it's been that long.
Why do I love my log home? Well, to be really honest, part of the reason is the fact that it is my first home. And since we actually built the home log by log, we have a lot of "sweat equity" and memories built into our house. Now that I have a toddler, I realize more and more how virtually "maintenance free" the inside of my home is. The wood walls are so homey and pretty indestructible. (A little goo-gone does wonders for crayola-colored walls, and I have no drywall "art" to repair.) At night, I love to lie on the couch and look out the dormer window at the full moon. At mid-day the sunshine illuminates that same couch. Even during a thunderstorm, my log home is cozy and inviting. There's no other way to describe life in my log home- relaxing.
Would I do anything differently? Well, I suppose I'd like a little more space in the living room, and a mud room would be nice; but if getting all that means that I'd still be dreaming about my log home instead of watching deer off the back porch in MY VERY OWN LOG HOME- I'll take the deer over the dream any day."
